Regarding "Common Abbreviations" , there're really acronyms. Like the FBI, CIA, FICO are not abbreviations but acronyms.

Actually to be completely correct, I think they are all Abbreviations. An abbreviation is any shortening of a word or words.
Under Abbreviations, you have Acronyms and Initialisms.
An acronym is prounounced like a word: AIDS, DARE, MADD, WHO, etc.
With Initialisms, you pronounce the letters individually: DMV, NYC, DVD, FBI, etc.
