Overnight, American Express added cautionary language to the terms and conditions for all the personal Delta SkyMiles cards – from the no-annual-fee Delta SkyMiles® Blue American Express Card up to the Delta SkyMiles® Reserve American Express Card – that explicitly spell out when they might revoke a big welcome bonus. Namely, cardholders with a history of canceling (or downgrading) Amex cards within a year of opening them are being targeted to have their bonuses withheld … or clawed back.

This is pretty well known for awhile with AMEX gaming the system they can claw it back or your will be blacklisted from receiving future bonuses for awhile if you don't keep cards past a year. Ideally right before the 2nd AF hits is when one would chose to close their card if they just used it for the bonus doing so prior to AF hitting meaning keeping card only for year is a bad move for many years with AMEX since their RAT team has been stepping it up.

Well actually you would cancel right after the second annual fee hits. Within the first 30 days after that second annual fee hits to get a refund of that annual fee.
There's absolutely zero point to open a gold card, for example, get the bonus and not keep it open for the entire year. You cancel it after about 12 and a half months.
