I dug out a letter they sent me - it's generated as soon as I click "apply," no credit check. I think they used to cite "previous closed accounts" until I paid them off. Reps I've spoken with won't say anything really, other than reading me this template verbatim.

I suspect they'll approve you once the bankruptcy drops off. Other posts on here say it's rare for them to approve with one reporting.

But...but......I'll be.........dead?
I'm still unclear how you got 2 x approvals right out of the gate, after paying? Way more than I ever owed them? They also said I would be in the clear, following said payment. I haven't had any trouble with approvals elsewhere, bankruptcy or not.

I'm not sure other than I defaulted on the card 15+ years ago. The time lapse perhaps?

That's possible - even though your balance was infinitely larger. You mean to say you just sailed through their online application like it was nothing to them, and no questions asked? I did try applying via phone at least once, but same result - the rep said she'd transfer me for the reconsideration, but the (offshore) guy did nothing besides read statements like "contact Experian for your free credit report" or other such nonsense.

Oddly yes. It's the one of the few credit cards I've applied for that didn't require further review. Chase took a month - twice. BoA took a week.

Exact opposite for me, which is wild - I had to call and explicitly ask Chase for reconsideration, but they actually did and I got approved. It would be good to get names or contacts at AmEx who have real authority, and can override whatever block their system puts on people... Very sad that companies like Delta and Hilton have decided to partner with this horrific institution.

I think I've read older threads on here that usually it was a number of years after the bankruptcy if AMEX was included in it before they'll approve you.
Sorry I don't have any answers about who to talk to. I spoke to the recovery team when I settled. They wouldn't make any guarantees I'd get approved just said I would no longer be automatically denied.
I kind of have this same question as I caused AMEX a $4900 loss from Ch7 in 2014 (Gold Delta card)
I have two non-AMEX closed charge off accounts that I believe should fall off this year.
I will be getting my balances down over the next few months, do not have any lates on any of my open accounts, and my 9.5 year old bankruptcy will fall of Oct 2024.
Do I need to pay the $4900 back before they will consider approving me? Or do I just need to wait for my balances to come down and the negative accounts to drop off?
I don't need any high tier AMEX credit/charge cards. I just want to get my foot in the door, and build a relationship with them (possibly with a Blue or Gold credit/charge card)
Thank you.

Invariably your best bet will be to pay them back or at least settle. I settled and got back but as my earlier posts said, it was 15+ years before I tried and it wouldn't happen if I didn't pay them back.
Not a bankruptcy but just a default on the debt.
